Gabriel Hartl Obituary

On March 24, 2022, Gabriel Matthew Hartl peacefully left this life to be with our Lord, lovingly surrounded by his family.  He was born on March 10, 1951 to, Matthew and Clara Kardos Hartl in Budapest, Hungary.  Gabe was a very private man. However, his family is so very proud of him for all that he survived.  He and his parents narrowly escaped from Hungary in December 1956 after the failed Hungarian revolution in response to the Russian Invasion.  After high school graduation he joined the Army.  He honorably served as a medic in Vietnam.
He married the love of his life, Esther Schubert, on March 19, 1977. Together they had three children, Matthew, Andrew, and Laura.

Gabe and Esther are extremely proud and active grandparents. They both enjoyed going to their grandchildren’s sporting events. One of Gabe’s favorite pastimes was spending time at his farm with their grandkids. Gabe loved sharing his passion for fishing with his grandchildren as well.

Gabe started his career as a Cartographer. He then transitioned to advertising, working at the Zanesville Times Recorder.  He was honored to be the advertising director at the Morgan County Herald, a position he held for over sixteen years.  While working for the paper, Gabe thoroughly enjoyed working with local business owners and getting to know the community members.

Gabe will be missed by many. He was kind and caring to all those he met. Gabe cared deeply for Morgan County, and was known to wave to all he saw as he walked around town.
Gabe was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, (Esther) of McConnelsville; his son, Matthew (Mindy) of Lexington, Ky; his son, Andrew (Ashley) of Chattanooga, Tn; his daughter, Laura Kate (Josh) of West Chester, Ohio; and his “adopted” son, Eric Driver of McConnelsville. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Gabriel, Elsie, Teddy, and Amelia. In addition, he is survived by a dear family friend, Beth White.

The family will be forever grateful to the 3rd floor & CCU doctors, nurses & Chaplins at Genesis Hospital in Zanesville.  Their dedicated care and kindness helped to sustain us throughout his illness. Burial will be at a later date at the family cemetery.  In addition to flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Gabe to 4shadow.org.

Memorial services for Gabe will be held at 3:00 pm April 9 at Saint James Episcopal Church 155 N 6th Street in Zanesville. The family will welcome friends from 1:30 pm until the service. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.Miller-huck.com.
