Nellie Kay Shumaker Paxton died on November 10, 2021 following a long illness. She was born in Rehoboth, near New Lexington, Ohio on September 23, 1937, a daughter of Raymond and Kathryn Shumaker. She was a proud 1955 graduate of New Lexington High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, varsity cheerleader, and homecoming queen. She is survived by one brother, Gary (Janet) Shumaker; her children, Tamera Boyt, Sheri (Jerry) Dixon, Joe (Patricia) Paxton, Missy (Pete) McGrath, Carri (John) Lancia; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe Paxton; sisters, Betty Northrup, and Charlotte Shirkey; brother, Raymond "Sonny" Shumaker. Nell was primarily a homemaker. She worked at Sears Catalog Store in McConnelsville for several years and was a Longaberger consultant. Among her favorite things in life were spending summers going to Lake Isabella, trips to Myrtle Beach, going out to eat, watching movies at the theatre, exercising, and reading books. She enjoyed traveling with her family and friends and was able to go to Europe, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, and Hawaii, and many places in the United States. Nell loved playing cards with her friends and hosting euchre parties. She was known for being an expert pie maker and preparing baked beans and scotcheroos for every picnic. She attended the Malta United Methodist Church. Calling hours will be held at Miller-Huck Funeral Home in McConnelsville on Monday, November 15, 2021 from 11 to 1 with a service at 1:00p.m. Per her wishes a cremation will take place and burial will be at a later date in New Lexington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please contribute in her memory to the Kate Love Simpson Library or the Twin City Opera House.
