Curtis T. Balding died peacefully on April 24, 2016, at Heartland of
Marietta. Ohio He leaves behind a sister, Mrs. Gerda I. Kunkel (Joseph),
of Scarborough Maine, two nephews and their wives-Peter (Kim),
Scarborough, Maine, and David Kunkel (Donna), St. Augustine, Florida,
and one great-niece,Yvonne Sophie Kunkel of Scarborough, Maine.
Curtis Terence Balding was born April 20, 1945 in New York City to
Curtis C. Balding of Morgan County Ohio and Gerda Iven Balding, a native
of Hamburg, Germany. He spent his earliest years in Rockville Centre,
Long Island, New York.
In 1949, Curtis and his sister accompanied their mother back to her
native Hamburg, Germany, to meet for the first time Curtis's German
relatives, survivors of WWII and the total destruction of Hamburg.
Curtis would spend time at the Evart and Esta Balding Davis family farm
in Malta, Ohio, every summer-- home to his father's sister.
Curtis was enrolled in a succession of private schools for the disabled
and finally placed in Gallipolis Developmental Center, where he resided
for many years under State guardianship.
In 2011, Curtis was moved into a Group Home in McConnelsville, in Morgan
County, where he participated in the Mary Hammond Workshop. Due to
declining health, he was moved to Riverside Landing, McConnelsville,
Ohio.
Most recently he was under Hospice Care at Heartland of Marietta.
Services will be held at the Miller-Huck Funeral Home,on Wednesday, April 27 at 12:00 pm with
Harmon Thomas officiating. Burial will take place at the Wolf Creek Cemetery, Malta, beside
Curtis's father and mother, where his Balding forefathers are also buried.
The family would like to thank Curtis's caretakers and the State of Ohio
for its guardianship and asks that any donations be sent to a charity of one's
choice.
